An Erotic Friday Featuring Author Em Petrova

It's been almost two years ago to the day when I, by chance, met and befriended author Em Petrova.  At the time she was gearing up for her debut release. I can still remember all the long chats we shared into the night talking about books, writing and our four kids!

When her debut book hit the shelves I was amazed by her talent and uniqiue approach to story telling. She writes with a wicked flare for steamy romance while never leaving out the heart of all romance stories...love. One way or another her characters always prevails against the odds. That's one reason I love reading her books. Her talent is as unique as she is and she shows no sign of slowing down.  In less than two years Em  has released over twenty erotic romance books that have had readers begging for more.

Today I'd like to treat everyone to an extended snippet from one of her books that I am very fond of. I remember speaking with her during the writing process on this particular book amazed at how her mind worked through the creation of such a story.

I hope you enjoy. Below you'll find the blurd, book deets and of course the snippet!

Happy Reading! ANd you're always welcome to give the author a shout out in the comment section. I'm sure some author love would really give Em a nive weekend! :)

Title: Accidental SEAL
Author: Sharon Hamilton
Publisher: Self
Length: 100,000 words
Genres: Contemporary Erotic Navy SEAL/Military Romance

Available at:
Amazon

Back of the Book:
Christy Nelson embarks on her new career in Real Estate by holding her first open house. Entering the wrong house, by accident, she finds the nude sleeping body of a young man.
Navy SEAL Kyle Lansdowne, on a mission to find his AWOL Team buddy, is staying at his buddy’s home while investigating the disappearance.  When someone breaks in, he takes protective measures. He doesn’t expect to find that a beautiful young woman is responsible for his teammate’s abduction.
What starts out as a meeting by accident becomes a hot affair neither one is ready for. Kyle is conflicted about getting Christy involved in his mission, but his hand is forced when he learns the same San Diego gang responsible for his teammate’s abduction has kidnapped her.
Battling a cadre of dirty law enforcements hell-bent on getting military equipment, especially state-of-the-art firepower, Kyle is forced to admit that he would die to protect her.

Excerpt:
Christy’s red Honda looked like a wet cherry lollipop, shined and polished to perfection. Cute and shiny on the outside, but hot and sweltering on the inside. Sitting in the cramped front seat, she stopped and squinted to make out house numbers, comparing them to the address Wayne had minutely scribbled on the back of his business card. Then she found it.

The house appeared nicer than he’d described. The advertised price, he said, was the lowest in the neighborhood, going back ten years. Hopefully she’d pick up a young couple out looking for their first home, complete with good credit and a wad of cash from Mommy and Daddy. Wouldn’t it be great to make a sale on her very first day on the job?

She parked in the driveway, popped the trunk, and brought out three sandwich signs with the Patterson Realty logo, on loan from Wayne. He was out with his family today. She hoped the Somervilles didn’t stop by since she’d feel uncomfortable looking into the eyes of Wayne’s wife, a woman he probably cheated on and would again, if he got the chance. One of Christy’s other rules: no married men. She wasn’t about to change that, either.

A perfumed late spring breeze blew softly against her face and neck, sending a thrill up her spine. The air ripened with possibility. This was her favorite time of year.

The walkway looked freshly swept. After placing one sign in the front yard, she stacked the other two beside the front door and inserted Wayne’s key. While the lock accepted the new shiny silver metal, the tumblers stayed in place, frozen.

Way to go Wayne. Waste my time and give me the wrong key!

Irritation bubbled, ruining her cheerful, spring-induced mood. She yanked on the front handle and pushed against it out of frustration. It opened.

“Anybody home?” Her voice wavered like that of a small child. She waited. No answer.

Christy stepped inside, onto a striped cotton rug lying cockeyed behind the front door. The smell of fried food hit her. She walked across the wooden floor of the living room, her stilettos clacking. She cracked open a window. Air scented by fresh blossoms poured in, diluting the smells of ordinary life. She grabbed the newspaper tossed on top of an ottoman and folded the crinkling pages under her arm, aiming for the kitchen to find a trashcan. She passed the dining room table, which was strewn with a map of the area, a couple of felt-tipped pens, and a letter-sized yellow lined tablet. She collected these items as well and made her way to the kitchen.

Christy threw the tablet and newspaper onto the tiled countertop and placed her hands on her hips to assess the scene before her. She squinted at several days’ worth of dishes piled high in the sink. Next to it, a large stainless steel bowl sat encrusted with dark green and purple leaves at the bottom, evidence of a salad—several days old.

Maybe Wayne had neglected to tell the sellers about the open house. She decided it was entirely possible. “How can you expect to sell a house this way?” she muttered, then sighed and removed her jacket, slinging it over the back of a clean-looking kitchen chair. She decided to take a tour of the place, checking for other things to clean or straighten before she’d be ready to hold it open.

But this house was such a mess, an uneasy darkness chilled her. She tiptoed down the carpeted hallway, feeling like an intruder, past empty rooms, to a closed door at the end.

Probably the master bedroom.

Something about the whole scene was strange. These people left without cleaning up dinner from several days before, in a hurry. She’d been told short sale houses rarely showed pride of ownership, but this felt absolutely creepy, like she’d stepped on someone’s grave. The hair at the back of her neck bristled as she gripped the doorknob. She lightly tapped with her other hand, and then opened the door.

A naked body lay on the bed.

Holy crap.

Hesitant to look at first, she pushed through her fear. She saw movement. Tanned skin, a muscular male chest that rose and fell. Earphones were wired to a phone balanced on his open palm. The man was very much alive, and healthy. Her eyes drifted further down to a dusting of dark brown hair that led to an impossible-to-miss erection. His penis stood at attention, like a deep rose-colored light standard under a matching fireman’s hat of deeper pink.

Blood pumped to her ears, making them ring, as her heart raced. A wave of anger coursed over her at the realization she had been the victim of a very sick joke perpetrated by Wayne and one of his disgusting friends.

Christy silently closed the door and tiptoed back down the carpeted hallway, her three-inch heels wobbling on the thick, padded surface. Her knees knocked against each other as she picked up speed, her anger building. She grabbed her jacket, keys, and purse, and crossed the living room, headed toward the front door. She was almost free.

Christy wouldn’t give the prankster the satisfaction of knowing she had even seen him. She wanted to stomp her foot and kick something through the window. This was Wayne’s doing.

That sonofabitch and his lopsided plugs will pay for this.

She pulled the door handle and was rewarded by the smells of a warm spring day bleeding through the inch-wide crack she’d created. An enormous hand and forearm came from behind her and slammed the door shut. She saw a familiar blue-green tattoo of some animal tracks on his muscled forearm just before his other hand gripped her mouth. Callused fingers pinched the sides of her cheeks. The grip hurt.

A Contemporary Thursday Featuring Cherry Adair

I absolutely love the tagline in Cherry Adair's Undertow. It reads, "IN A SEA FULL OF DANGER, PASSIONS RUN DEEP". The first things that grabs my attention about a book is the tagline and with this one if the author wasn't already a must-have, that tagline would have sold me hook, line and sinker. lol No pun intended on that one. I've been a huge fan of Ms. Adairs since I began reading romance in my teens. She continues to leave me in awe at her ability to write a romance that stays with me long after reading it.

Since it's hotter than molten lava outside and I can think of nothing better than a dip in the ocean not 10 feet from where I currently sit. Continuing that train of thought how about a long snippet reading-or two-from Undertow? Fitting, right? Hot romance and the Caribbean!

Happy reading!

Back of the Book

SHE TAKES THE PLUNGE.
Teal Williams is content with her career as a ship’s master mechanic—until Zane Cutter, the “Casanova of the Caribbean,” makes her an offer she can’t refuse: to climb on board with him for a real-life treasure hunt. Teal must help him dredge up a shipwrecked vessel containing an abundance of gold, silver, and emeralds—and she’ll claim part of the prize.

HE’S BLOWN OFF COURSE.
Zane needs a mechanic—not a lover—and Teal, who can also dive, is perfect for the job.  So it suits him just fine that Teal is completely immune to his charms…or so he tells himself.  But with a deadly enemy in their midst—one who’s silently edging closer—Zane and Teal sink into troubled waters. Trapped in the middle of a perilous sea, they have no one to turn to but each other as they face down a danger that runs unfathomably deep—and a passion that runs even deeper…

Snippet Reading One

Startled by Teal’s abrupt departure, Maggie took a step forward. “Wait, where are you—” “Engine room.” The only place that never made her sick. Only the smell of diesel fuel would help. “Confined space will make it wo—”
Teal fled, lurching like a drunken sailor, pushing through a tight group of men in the main salon. “Excuse me. Sorry. Thanks. Sorry.” Her mouth filled with saliva. Gripping the brass handrails on either side, she took the spiral stairs three at a time.
Panicked, she scanned the small hallway at the bottom. Which door led to the engine room? The calming pulse of twin, V12, four-stroke diesels under her feet was the only thing holding her nausea at bay. All she prayed for, other than a swift death, was that if she was close to an engine the smell and vibration would kick the nausea.
Or it wouldn’t and she’d be somewhere private when she hurled. In three, two —.
   “Hey, gorgeous, lost your way?”
Teal’s eyes traveled up a clean, white T-shirt pulled taut over rock-hard abs, up his tanned throat, climbed to his darkly stubbled chin, over his straight nose, and landed, reluctantly, on a pair of piercing, annoyinglyamused, blue eyes. Zane freaking Cutter. God, seriously? Kill me now.
Just as he came closer, the boat pitched, tilting her off balance. She staggered, but already unsteady, couldn’t manage to right herself. It was grab at Zane to break her fall, or fall on her face. In a split second she opted for the latter. She did not want to touch—Ah, shit! She fell against his chest.
   Hard. Hot.No. No. No.
“Whoa!” He grabbed her by her upper arms, hauling her upright as if she weighed no more than a bag of laundry, so that her breasts were inadvertently caressed by the hard plane of his chest. The contact was like an intense electrical shock that zoomed through Teal’s body and fried her brain.
She blushed like an idiot. The physical contact was too much. She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t think. She tasted his coffee-scented breath on her lips and felt the heat of his skin through his clothes as his fingers tightened on her arms. Rattled by the contact, all she could do was blink up at him for what felt like an eternity. He frowned down at her. “Okay?”
Teal stood there for just a few more seconds inhaling the scent of his skin as her heart went ballistic and her brain cells scrambled to reconnect. His worried frown morphed into a slow smile. Annoying. Confident. “Are you—” Her nausea returned full force. Gritting her teeth she slapped her palm, hard, against his midriff, fingers splayed.
   “Out. Of. My. Way.”

***

Snippet Reading Two

Nick ferried Teal back several hours later. Zane had kept a watchful eye on theScorpion. If Nick was in a seducing frame of mind, she wouldn’t stand a chance. Had he? Had they?
He waited while his brother handed her on board theDecrepit. Her hair was windblown, her nose and cheeks a little pink, and he loved what she did for his T-shirt. He wanted to take it off of her. Slowly. “We found a wreck that hadn’t been completely cleaned out. Nothing big, just some coins. Go take a turn cleaning so Maggie can take a break,” Zane told her.
“Of course.” She flashed him a narrow-eyed look, then smiled at his brother. “Thanks for a fun lunch, Nick.” She strolled off, all long legs and attitude. He admired those luscious legs and imagined pressing his mouth to the tender spot just behind her knee, right in the sensitive bend …
He turned on Nick. “Lunch? That’s why you needed my mechanic? To help you eat lunch?”
Nick ignored him, his eyes fixed on Teal as she headed inside. “She’s had some … issues.”
“Yeah. Having a friend putting the moves on her. What the hell were you thinking, Spock? You have no right to mess with her. She’s not like the women we know. Under that cranky, sassy exterior she’s … I don’t know. Kinda fragile, I think. She’s not up to your speed. Seriously.”
“Or yours.” Nick seemed to choose his words carefully as he said, “Practice what you preach, Ace. I think she was abused.”
Zane’s body went icy cold, then blazed with heat. Oh, no. Oh, fucking no. He didn’t want to hear this. But itfit,God damn it. Not Sam—unless it was neglect.
   “Abusive boyfriend?”
Christ—The thought made him sick, but the emotional disconnect, the bits and pieces he’d observed. Ah, hell. Anyone who hurt someone smaller and weaker than himself needed to be castrated and hung up to dry. That anyone would hurt Teal was unacceptable on every level.
Nick stuck his hands in his pant pockets and stared at the spot where Teal had stood moments before. He turned back to Zane as if a decision had been made. “Husband. She was married.”
Zane stared at his brother. “Married? Teal? Are you sure? She hasn’t mentioned it, and Sam’s never said a word.”
“She didn’t want anyone to know. I’m breaking a confidence here, Ace.”
“Why would she keep a husband a secret from her own father? Wait a minute. How do you know?”
Zane pointed his finger at Nick’s chest. “Did she tell you?” And why was she confiding in his brother?
“She let it slip over lunch that she didn’t want her ex to know where she is. Think I’ll do some digging.”

How's your day look now? After some Cherry Adair the day always turns out better, don't you think? So tell me, have any favorite Adair books you'd like to share? I currently have my eye on Vortex. I think, if I behave the rest of the week, I'll treat myself to a new book. :)

Guest Blog & Giveaway with Author Lilly Cain

Hi everyone! Happy Hump Day! Please help me welcome author Lilly Cain here today to celebrate the release of Undercover Alliance from Carina Press! She's whipped up a fabulous guest blog along with all the goodies on her book. And as an added goodie, Lilly is giving away a little something for one commenter that you'll find out about at the bottom of her guest post. AND there's also a little something for everyone, so don't miss it!

Welcome, Lilly!

Stop, Look and Listen

Thank you for having me here today, Talina! On Monday, the third book in my The Confederation Treaty series from Carina Press, Undercover Alliance, released in ebook format. Sometime in the next few days it will also be released as an audible book.

It’s been an interesting experience, having the series come out as audible books with Audible.Com, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the third book. Each of my long novellas have been read by a different performer.

With Alien Revealed, the first in the series, I was really amazed to hear the language of the Inarrii – the alien species chose for first contact with humans by the Confederacy – spoken aloud. The reader had an awesome accent, almost Russian sounding. It wasn’t quite like I imagined, but it was fascinating. Listen to a sample here: Alien Revealed (the sample button is right under the cover picture). The performer was Marianne Fruelo, and I think she did an awesome job. Really fluent, although I wonder how many times she had to read over the Inar words, LOL.

In book two of the series, The Naked Truth, I had a new reader and I was worried how she might handle the emotion of the book. It’s sci-fi erotic romance, but Asler Kiis, my hero, has a lot of depth and some intense feelings as both an investigator / judge and therapist, a special Inarrii position called an Examiner. I think the performer, Victoria Hammerstein, did a good job, although I wasn’t all that keen on her sample. Listen here: The Naked Truth.

In book three, the second last novella in the series called Undercover Alliance, the key thing in the reading will be getting across the urgency of the action, without later sacrificing the tenderness between the tough lady warrior and the undercover human spy. I have yet to hear what this will be like, as I am penning this blog a few days ahead of the release. But I am really excited to find out.

Have any of you listened to an audio book? Was it romance? Action? Sci-fi or mystery? Did you think that the reader conveyed what the author was hoping for?

I’m hosting a little giveaway, one lucky commenter will receive an invitation to review all the books in my ‘New Releases’ page on my website and chose any book they’d like to have in ebook format (I’d love to give away an audible version but I have yet to figure out how to transfer those, sorry!). Enjoy! PS – don’t chose Return to Me – it’s free this week on Amazon!

A Cozy Mystery Wednesday with Author Riley Adams

It's A Cozy Mystery Wednesday! We're almost there. The weekend is right around the corner. Those crushed ice margaritas I love so much when kicking back are singing my name and I know they'll taste all that more delicious by the time Friday rolls around. For today though, let's enjoy a mystery and an author that knows her stuff!

As always, I'm quick to pick up a book when I come across something I think I'll like or want to read soon. That is how I came across Riley Adams A Memphis BBQ Mystery series. The covers caught my attention first then I read the blurb and was hooked. The title also played a good part in it too. I love how clever the titles are in this series.

Today I've picked Finger Lickin' Dead. Here's the back of the book info and an extended blurb.

Happy Reading

Back of the Book
When an anonymous food critic blasts several local restaurants- including Aunt Pat's-Lulu Taylor and her customers are biting mad, especially when they learn that Eppie Currian is the pen name of their friend Evelyn's cheating boyfriend. When "Eppie" gets his own fatal review, the list of suspects is longer than the list of specials at the best BBQ place in Memphis.

SNIPPET READING
“Somebody,” said Cherry darkly, “should kill that guy.”
“Only as a last resort,” said her good friend Peggy Sue. “Have we exhausted all the other possibilities? Rolled his house with toilet paper? Made prank phone calls? Shaken pepper in his sweet tea?” She gave a lilting laugh.
“I’m not so clear what his punishable offense is,” said Lulu, tilting her head to one side as she pondered and endangering the small bun of white hair at the top of her head. “We don’t like Adam Cawthorn because he’s dating Evelyn? Because he’s too good-looking?”
“Because he’s snarky,” growled Cherry. “Besides, I think he’s taking advantage of Evelyn, who is, as y’all know, one of my favorite people in the world. He’s always asking for a little bit of money here and a little bit there. Besides, he has a weak chin. What good is it if you’ve got looks but a weak chin?”
Lulu considered this. “Still, it doesn’t sound too awful, Cherry. Evelyn’s loaded with money—maybe it doesn’t bother her to share it a little bit. Does he treat her badly?”
“He doesn’t treat her well,” said Flo thoughtfully.
“On the upside,” said Lulu, “he sure does eat some barbeque. He’s good for business.” Lulu was the owner of Memphis’s famous Aunt Pat’s Barbeque, right there on Beale Street. As a second-generation owner, she knew by now what made for a good customer. And Adam Cawthorn, despite his shortcomings, had one of the biggest components of a good customer—frequent visits.
“No, he’s not good for business,” said Cherry. “Evelyn is. She’s the one shelling out the money for him to eat here. And think about it—he’s separated from his wife. He’s been running around on her, so why wouldn’t he be doing the same with Evelyn? Besides, she’s already been married to him once before. Clearly that didn’t work out so well, so why try for mistake number two?”
“Heads up, y’all—Evelyn’s coming over,” hissed Jeanne, looking across the restaurant’s crowded dining room.
Lulu thought for the hundredth time how lucky she was to have such a great group of regulars at her restaurant. These ladies, who were some of her favorite guests at Aunt Pat’s Barbeque, were dubbed the Graces by everyone because they were docents at Graceland. They were colorful, fun—and loyal, thought Lulu as she watched them struggle to be supportive of Evelyn.
The Graces and Lulu looked like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouth by the time Evelyn got up to their booth. But Evelyn wouldn’t have noticed if they’d all been wagging their tongues about her right when she walked up. She was sitting high up on cloud nine. Lulu frequently reflected that it was a good thing Evelyn was so nice; she wouldn’t have been tolerable otherwise, with her good looks, good luck, and boatload of money. Most of the Graces were happy members of the Fabulous Fifties club, but Evelyn hadn’t quite joined yet. Peggy Sue was already part of the Sassy Sixties—which Lulu had belonged to for quite a while.
Evelyn gave her a hug and a smile that lit up the room. “I am so glad to see y’all! Isn’t it a gorgeous day?”
No, thought Lulu. Actually, it was a pretty miserable day outside, unless you were partial to torrential rain. But she smiled and nodded.

Back Of The Book:

The fallout from the team’s failed mission to Lebanon is still chewing Lt. Col. Roger Weston’s butt. God help them all if the media get wind of the real story. Worse, guilt is eating him alive over a decision that left a fallen warrior’s wife without a husband…and exposed to danger from her radical family.

No matter what, Mari Dalton’s safety and wellbeing—and that of her unborn child—come first.

Mari is certain God is punishing her. She loved the man who rescued her from a windowless cell in Afghanistan, and never betrayed their marriage. But she has never been able to forget her body’s reaction to Roger. The pounding heart, the burning senses, sinful thoughts run wild.

Now she is the target of terrorists bent on destroying the heart of America. As Roger lays his life on the line to protect her, they uncover a plot already in motion to assassinate the President. As the world teeters on the edge of chaos, any hope for a future rests in Roger’s already bloodstained hands…and the quietly faithful woman who holds his heart.

Warning: Hot action and to die for heroes will leave you breathless.

First Line:
“Today the hunt begins. The predator is now our prey.

Teaser:

Roger sighed and nearly staggered from the weight of guilt he shouldered. “Damn it. That’s not where I’m coming from, soldier. I’m not stuffing it down your throat, but we have to keep the world from imploding if we can. Why can’t you see that?”
“I see it.” Beck’s voice sounded like ground glass. “Then I see Rico crippled and Pecos blind. Then I see Amanda James paralyzed. Then I don’t see Neil walking through the damn door and shit in my head gets all out of whack.”
“Don’t you think the same thing happens to me every minute of the day? Except in my case, when I shut my eyes, I see those three kids and the women who died. But I still toe the line. Do you know what it does to me inside to know that if I hadn’t ordered the missile—”

Plot & Characters:
An all consuming powerful story that shows the price we pay for the bonds that tie us to the lives of others and the power of the choices made by them.

This riveting story holds strong roots in the romance and love we search for in life, the love that Mari and Lt. Col. Roger Weston battle against and eventually for. We see it time and again serve as the bases of what makes us human, bringing us back from the brink of destruction. Tactical Deception is a masterfully crafted story with a message hidden in and around an action packed gut wrenching tale of horrific plots of terrorism and those that must step up to the plate to defend their country no matter the cost to themselves.

In book one we meet and follow a Delta Force Team through cracking a plot of terrorism set to unfold and destroy the lives of so many. Each member is shown to us through their actions to reach the end of what is going on; actions that offer us great insight into their character. Lives were saved, a family formed, but lives were also lost which leads us to the major romance plot in book two. In Tactical Deception we join up with them again as they deal with the aftermath of the fallout from the previous attack while trying to break through recently discovered terrorist cells already killing innocent people in America and gunning for the President while also weeding out the threat from the White Aryan Vipers Militia training Camp set on setting the balance straight again.

There are intense moments when you think everything is going to go south and other moments when you are cheering for whatever advancement the main hero and heroine make in reaching towards some kind of happiness between them. Then the author throws us in the deep end by showing us what’s going on in the minds of the antagonist, of which there are many. It’s a tangled web of deceit, family treachery and love. Love of friendship. Love of camaraderie between the men of the Delta force. And love between a man and a woman that just might beat all the odds stack against them.  The road is a bloody one but so worth the fight when you reach the end. It will bring a tear to your eye and pull at your soul. It also sheds a ray of light on a people and culture that are misunderstood at times. The author definitely did her research for this series and it shows through the seamless story she has written.

To go into detail of how this book’s scenes unfold would be pointless in that you, as the reader, need to experience each moment for yourself to grasp the full concept and emotion buried within each page. It’s that intense. Ms. Saint, you’ve really outdone yourself. This is the blockbuster of military romantic suspense!

Writing:
True to her talent Ms. Saint has delivered a well written a story worthy of her title as a USA Today’s Bestselling author under her writing name Jennifer Saint Giles.  Her ability to write with such depth and perception, smooth prose, fast paced action and hot loves scenes make on heck of a combination that delivers explosive stories that readers will never forget.

Summary:
Ms. Saint can write one hell of a military romantic suspense! I highly recommend this book, this series, THIS AUTHOR to readers that love to step into stories with heart and meaning. Not to mention hot heroes the heroines they fall in love with! Tactical Deception was just too good to put down and I want more! Here’s to hoping bad boy Corporal Rico Santana gets his story in the next installment in the Silent Warrior Series!

An Urban Tuesday with UF Author Jenn Bennett

Hi Everyone! Thanks for stopping in for this week's An Urban Tuesday! I've picked up a few books this past weekend and one of them was Jenn Bennett's second book in her Arcadia Bell Series, Summoning The Night!

I'm such a cover freak but that isn't what drew me to this book. ( though it is kick-ass!) When Bennett's debut novel, book one-Kindling the Moon of the Arcadia series-came out I did a vlog reading of the book and fell in love with the author's spunk and whit when writing in first person. She writes in vivid color and surround sound leaving nothing out while never leaving the first person point-of-view. That's tricky my friends and Ms. Bennett nailed it the first time out of the gates and I'm anxious to dive into this one to find out what happens next with Arcadia. It might take me a couple of weeks to get to it but the wait is worth it!

How about you? Any Jenn Bennett fans out there that have already read this release?

Here's the blurb and extended excerpt. Let me know what you think in the comment section. Talk Urban fantasy with me! :)

Back of the Book:

The second in a not-to-be-missed urban fantasy series about a freewheeling magician who slings drinks at a demon-friendly tiki bar.

Renegade magician and tiki bar owner Arcadia “Cady” Bell is rebuilding her life after narrowly escaping her fate as sacrificial scapegoat. When a fiendish bogeyman sends the community into a fear-fueled tailspin, the influential head of the local Hellfire Club asks for her help in tracking him down. Now that Cady is dating the club’s wayward son, she can hardly say no.

Cady and Lon soon untangle a gruesome trail of clues that puts all the Earthbound children of the club members in danger—including Lon’s teenage son, Jupiter. If Cady can conjure up a little metaphysical help from her demonic bar patrons, she might just be able to figure out the true identity of the Sandpiper Park Snatcher and stop him before he takes another victim.

“A great offbeat debut novel with a likeable heroine and a fun, original storyline.” —New York Times bestselling author Karen Chance

SNIPPET READING

   Executioner.
That’s what Dare wanted from me. The same role I’d been forced to play with my parents. Icy shock froze my tongue as this realization dredged up guilty feelings that I logically shouldn’t have, but did. Damn them for forcing me into that role, and damn Dare for asking me to repeat it.
I didn’t say yes, but I couldn’t very well say no, either. Dare thanked me, nonetheless, assuming my silence was agreement. I guess it was. Who was selfish enough to refuse to help innocent kids? I might have been a few months ago … before my parents’ betrayal. Before Lon. Before Jupe.
But things had changed, and so had I, I supposed.
Lon and I exited Dare’s house with a shoe box of paperwork in tow, filled with information he’d amassed over the years regarding Jesse Bishop. Unfortunately, Dare had burned most of the incriminating papers that he’d found in Bishop’s home thirty years ago—the stuff that matched up the children’s names with spell elements—so all we had now was a fairly useless stack of Hellfire Club photos, a few yellowed newspaper clippings about the Sandpiper Park Snatcher case, and a list of the original missing children with addresses.
At the very bottom, below the paperwork, was a blue velvet ring box. Inside lay a small metal key about two inches long on a tarnished silver chain with a broken clasp. Dare said he’d found it at Bishop’s house beneath the kitchen table after they’d discovered Bishop missing. Dare and Lon’s father had searched the place for anything it could’ve possible fit, but came up empty.
None of this seemed useful in helping us locate Bishop, and to add to our frustration, Dare suspected the man had done some sort of cloaking magick in the ’80s, so he might be hard to find using normal methods today. Normal methods for me meant constructing a magical servitor—a roving ball of energy that fetched information. However, the last time I used a servitor to find another magician, it came back and bit me on the ass, and that’s when Jupe got hurt and kidnapped. I didn’t want to take that chance again until I was able to teach myself more advanced servitor techniques. Better to exhaust other methods first.
Lon put his SUV in gear and jerked the wheel to head down the long driveway. We stopped in front of the entrance gate and waited for one of Dare’s employees to open it and let us through.
“You didn’t tell Dare about my Moonchild ability, right?” I said.
The iron gates ground open in a slow arc as Lon fished his valrivia case out of his jacket pocket and speared me with an irritated glance. That was a no. A small relief.
I took one of the hand-rolled herbal cigarettes he offered. “I just don’t understand why he assumes I can banish an Earthbound. No one can. Unless you can find a way to travel in time to the Roanoke Colony,” I said with sarcasm. “Then maybe you could locate the magician who conjured your demon ancestors from the Æthyr and shoved them into their original human bodies.”
Lon lit up and passed me the lighter. I cracked the window as he headed out of the estate and onto the main road. “Seems to me you’ve banished all sorts of things you haven’t conjured lately.”
Sure, things in their original Æthyric bodies, like imps. Not humans or Earthbound demons in human bodies. Then again, my human parents had been sent into the Æthyr … but I hadn’t banished them outright—an Æthyric demon named Nivella took them. I just gave Nivella permission. It occurred to me, of course, that I might bargain with another Æthyric into taking Bishop if we were able to find him, but I didn’t say it out loud.
“Earthbounds can’t be separated,” I argued stubbornly. “Your demon nature has integrated with your human DNA. It would be like asking me to separate soul from body. Unless I could piece together some sort of antispell for the original Roanoke Invocation—which has been lost for hundreds of years—it’s a no-go. I’ve got skills, but I’m not God.”
“All I’m saying is that you don’t really know the extent of the Moonchild ability. You haven’t even used it since San Diego.”
I mumbled a noncommittal response. Call me a chicken, I don’t give a damn. My ability was unnaturally created by two homicidal maniacs masquerading as parents. What good could come of using it? Too much magick could make even the gentlest of magicians go nutso, and I had crazy genes working against me. If I started experimenting with the Moonchild ability, I was worried some sort of insanity clock would start ticking inside me. How long would it be before it went off? A month? A year? A decade? My parents weren’t even fifty when they started to go banana-boat. For all I knew, I might not even make it to thirty.
*~*

I love the quick and dry whit the main heroine of the story has. Well, in UF I do believe she'd be better known as the main character rather than the heroine, no? What do you think of her? From this small snippet I felt her still unable to really trust even those she is close to while reaching for something a bit more substantial even if she doesn't know it yet. Love that about the author, she can weave in the layers seamlessly!

And for anyone that wants to hear me read from Kindling the Moon, Book one of Jenn Bennett's Arcadia Bell series, here's the youtube video for easy reference. :) Enjoy!

EXCERPT
Sera’s attention wasn’t on the show. While her sire sat beside her in the sumptuous red velvet seats of the dark stalls, her focus fixed on the erotic acts playing out on the stage of Vampirerotique, Sera’s gaze was elsewhere, drawn to a man who had been on her mind since the first time she had set eyes on him over a year ago. He stood to her right at the edge of the theatre near the front row, shadows clinging to him as though they too were drawn to his lethal beauty, his own gaze on the stage. Not once did it stray from the performance—not even when she prayed under her breath every second that it would come to rest on her—and never did the intensity of it lessen. His pale icy eyes scrutinised everything, watching closely, as though he was studying it so he could give a blow-by-blow description of it to someone after it had ended. Perhaps he did. He often disappeared as soon as the show reached its climax with the bloodletting, heading through the double doors that led backstage to an area she could only imagine.

Her sire, Elizabeth, had described it for her a few times but she had always been more interested in learning more about the enigma that was the vampire who ran the theatre.

Antoine.

His name was as exotic as his looks. The deadly combination of lush chocolate brown hair, those intense pale blue eyes and his lithe figure that just screamed he would look like a god naked, was too much for her. The more she saw him, the more she wanted him.

Regardless of the warnings that her sire often whispered in her ear.

“Perhaps I should arrange for a seat closer to him next time?” Elizabeth hissed across at her, amusement ringing in her tone.

Sera tore her eyes away from Antoine, ashamed that she wasn’t watching the show that had cost her sire a pretty penny. Elizabeth had been getting her better seats with each performance and Sera knew that the closer they were to the stage and the action, the more expensive the tickets became. Not only that, but she had paid for Sera’s new outfit of a lacy deep green camisole top that matched her eyes and tight black jeans that showed off her legs to perfection, and the new highlights in her long blonde hair as well as the makeover they had both enjoyed this evening before attending the theatre.

She tried to watch the show, concentrated hard on maintaining her focus on the act playing out on the black stage but she couldn’t take in any of it. Her head swam, unable to keep track of what was happening, focus diverted by the drop-dead-gorgeous man who stood barely twenty feet away from her. She gritted her teeth and frowned, forcing her eyes to follow the performers. It didn’t help.

Seats closer to the stage just meant closer to Antoine, presenting her with a much better view of him. A view she didn’t want to squander.

Her gaze drifted back to him as though he had his own gravity and she was powerless against its pull. He stood side on to her, his tailored black trousers and crisp charcoal shirt accentuating his figure, igniting her imagination. It raced to picture him naked. Long legs and powerful thighs. Firm buttocks with sexy dimples above them. A lean muscled back that followed the sensual curve of his spine and flowed into strong shoulders that would be a pleasure to study as he moved. And finally, a chiselled torso blessed with rope after rope of honed muscles down his stomach and a chest that would feel solid beneath her cheek and palm as he held her protectively in his embrace.

Elizabeth giggled, the sound so out of place during the intense erotic performance that the dark-haired man in front of them looked over his shoulder and frowned.

“You don’t want to get involved with him. It wouldn’t end well,” Elizabeth said.

Sera wished that her sire had waited for the man to turn away before saying that. Now he was frowning at them both, dark eyebrows drawn tight above red eyes.

Elizabeth dismissively waved her hand, long scarlet nails catching the bright colourful lights that illuminated the stage. “I’m not talking about you. You’ll miss one of the best bits.”

The man’s frown hardened but he turned back to the show. Elizabeth swept her wavy dark red hair over her shoulder and returned her attention to the performance too. Sera fidgeted on her seat when she caught a glimpse of the man on stage. Victor. Elizabeth had worked with him during her time at the London theatre. He had been with Vampirerotique since a few years after it had opened a century ago and was their star performer. The large brunet male was currently pumping a woman in centre stage, his fangs enormous as he growled and fucked her side on to the audience so they could witness the whole act. The petite brunette bent over in front of him was moaning with each deep plunge of his cock, her hands grasping her knees and breasts swinging in time with his powerful thrusts. Two other men were pleasuring human females a short distance from him. The men sat on the red velvet gold-framed couches, one on each, flanking Victor where he stood close to the front of the black stage. The human females under the thrall of the other two vampires were facing the audience, kneeling astride the one who controlled them, bouncing on his cock and groaning as they palmed their breasts. Sera looked away, cheeks burning.

Elizabeth leaned towards her. “Besides, he’s as frigid as a nun and as cold as ice. In the fifty years that I worked for him, I never once saw him with a woman. The only person he loves is his messed up brother, and that’s one relationship you don’t want to interfere with.”

Sera had heard the warnings so many times now that they were losing their effect. Every time Elizabeth brought her to the theatre to watch a performance, she reiterated the long list of reasons why Sera shouldn’t want Antoine. Unfortunately, those warnings only made her want him even more. According to Elizabeth, the gorgeous male vampire had been alone for God only knew how long. Sera wanted to be the woman to smash his armour and tear down his defences, and end his loneliness.

If he was lonely.

Her gaze slid back to Antoine. He stood rod straight, posture perfect, shoulders tipped back as he continued to study the performance. The first few times she had seen him, she hadn’t thought to ask her sire about him. She had thought he was just one of the crowd stretching his legs. When Elizabeth had noticed her staring, she had told her that he was one of the owners of the theatre, and an aristocrat vampire. That had explained the tilt of his chin and the air of pride he wore, and perhaps even the coldness that settled on his face at times when he was greeting the more important guests before the show started.

He was so distant, even looked miles away as he studied the show, lost in thoughts that she wanted to know.

Elizabeth nudged her and she looked back at the stage, trying to keep her eyes off Antoine. If she couldn’t recount at least half of what had happened, Elizabeth would give her an earful on their way back to the city centre apartment they shared.

Things were heating up on stage. Victor had finished with his vampire female and was now toying with one of the humans, a young redhead with full breasts. The blond male vampire that had been with the female on the couch was with them, kissing her as Victor stood behind her, palming her breasts and rubbing himself against her backside. The blond male looked into her eyes and she turned obediently in his arms, coming to face Victor. She stared at him. Or beyond him. Her glassy expression said that the male now behind her wasn’t lessening any of his control just yet. It felt so wrong to watch a woman under the power of a vampire, unable to do anything to disobey her temporary master, but she couldn’t deny that it turned her on a little. The woman wouldn’t know any discomfort or panic. She was so deep under that she was probably experiencing the purest hit of pleasure she had ever had. Exactly what she had signed on for.

Elizabeth had let Sera in on a secret. Apparently, all of the humans who participated in the shows had agreed to the erotic acts in exchange for a rather handsome amount of money. Elizabeth said it hadn’t always been that way, but modern times called for a modern approach, and it was far easier not to kill them. The humans knew they would be participating in an on-stage orgy for an audience, and most of them had done such acts before, they just didn’t know what they shared that stage with. Vampires. That meant they also didn’t know they would be doing things under hypnosis.

Not that many of the humans required hypnosis to make them fully participate. The blond male vampire had lessened his control over the redheaded female human bent over in front of him, letting her desire rule her instead, and she was moaning and writhing against him, rubbing herself against his long hard cock.

Sera stared, cheeks heating, as he slowly inched his erection into her body and Victor stepped up in front of the woman. She reached for his rigid cock and closed her eyes as she wrapped her lips around his full length, swallowing him each time he thrust into her mouth. The man behind her pumped her at the same pace, drawn out and deep, slow enough that the audience was twitching for more.

Sera stared at the blond male, imagining Antoine behind her like that, his face a picture of pleasure as he slid in and out with long deep strokes.

Her gaze shot back to the man of her fantasy and she found he was still staring at the stage with the usual detached look on his face, as though the sight of two men on one woman didn’t arouse him in the slightest. She supposed that he had probably seen enough shows that he was immune to their effect now.

A few impatient growls erupted through the theatre and he flicked a glance over the audience and then went back to watching the show.

Sera had tried to talk to him once, when he had passed her by after the show had ended with the feeding and the crowd were leaving. He had blanked her. He hadn’t even glanced her way. He had walked straight past her as though she didn’t exist. She had spoken loudly enough that he must have heard her. It was after that moment that Elizabeth had started with the warnings, revealing only a tantalising amount of information about the powerful handsome aristocrat, just enough to make Sera want him even more.

Now, she craved his eyes on her, wanted to hear him speak and know his voice at last, and above all, she wanted to look up into his eyes and try to see past the barriers around his heart so she could understand him. Was his distance from everyone just because he was an aristocrat, or was there more to it than that?

A shriek from the stage melted into a moan of pleasure and the smell of human blood spilled through the air, encompassing her. Antoine visibly tensed, his arms flexing beneath his charcoal tailored shirt, as though he had clenched his fists. His pale eyes darkened, changed just as hers did to reveal her true nature. He turned away and she feared he would leave earlier than usual and her chance would slip by once again.

She tugged on Elizabeth’s arm and her sire sighed, rose to her feet, briefly applauded and then started along the row with her trailing behind. Her legs bumped several vampires who were still trying to watch the final act, absorbing the scent and the thrill of bloodshed. She didn’t care for it herself. More important matters needed her attention.

The men and women she passed snarled at her, baring their fangs in her direction and leaning to one side in an attempt to see past her. She muttered her apologies, trying to move quickly so they didn’t attack her. Elizabeth made that impossible. She moved slowly and with grace in her long scarlet dress, her head held high and no apologies leaving her lips. Her sire was old enough to stand against these vampires should they choose to attack but Sera wasn’t. It would be years before she had the strength of her sire. They reached the last person and broke out onto the wide strip of red carpet that lined the edge of the theatre.

“Antoine,” Elizabeth called and he paused and swung back to face her.

Sera’s heart almost stopped when his deep crimson gaze briefly flickered to her before returning to her sire.

Her nerves rose as he strolled up the incline to meet Elizabeth and Sera slowed, the gap between her and Elizabeth growing larger by the second. What was she doing? It had taken months for her to convince her sire to do this for her and now that she had finally agreed, her nerve was going to fail? She wanted this man’s eyes on her, wanted to be alone with him, and the only way to get what she wanted was to get a job at the theatre.

If she made it past the interview, then Antoine would have to meet with her. Elizabeth had said that he spoke with each new performer to ensure they were suitable for the theatre. Sera just had to get the interview out of the way and then she would have the chance she wanted. Once they were alone in his office, she would take a shot at convincing Antoine that she was the woman for him. Whatever the outcome of that meeting was, she would quit her role as a performer. She didn’t intend to perform at the theatre. Hell, no. She didn’t have the right sort of personality for that. She wanted to blush whenever she chanced a glance at the black and red stage set and saw what the couples on it were doing. If it weren’t for Antoine’s presence in the theatre and her sire’s insistence that they have a little fun, she would never come to such a place.

“Callum,” a deep male voice called out, sharp with authority, and Sera stopped dead. Sweet mercy, Antoine had a voice that could tame even the wildest of angels. That voice was a drug. It went straight into her heart and raced through her veins, the effect sweeter than any amount of blood.

Sera turned towards her sire and Antoine, only to see that he was walking away, leaving her sire with another dark-haired man. He was handsome, full of smiles as he spoke to Elizabeth, far warmer and more amiable than Antoine was but nowhere near as alluring. Elizabeth signalled her to join them and she did, moving past the vampires now spilling out of the stalls and watching Antoine leave at the same time. She’d had a chance to meet him and she had blown it. If she had only kept up with her sire, she would have been close to him, maybe would have caught his attention this time and had his eyes on her at last.

“Is this her?” the vampire called Callum said and ran a glance over her. Sera kept still, feeling as though she was for sale as he moved around her, his eyes on her body, inspecting and scrutinising every inch. He came back to stand before her and looked at Elizabeth. “The summer season will end soon so we’ll have time to train her before the winter one begins but we need someone with natural talent. Does she have what it takes?”

Sera opened her mouth to speak but Elizabeth beat her to it.

“Absolutely. She’s my child, Cal. It’s all in the blood.” Elizabeth smiled broadly at him, red lips curving perfectly. Her deep brown eyes shone with warmth and she swept her dark red hair over her shoulders, exposing their bare curves. “You know I am one of your best ever performers.”

Callum nodded and the longer lengths of his cropped black hair fell down over one emerald green eye. He frowned and raked it back, and then ran a hand around the nape of his neck, drawing Sera’s eyes to a set of dark marks on it. A bite mark. It looked deep and fresh too, no more than a night or two old. Did he have a lover?

He looked at her again and Sera’s gaze leapt to his. She swallowed the desire to confess that her sire was lying and she had no natural talent for the sort of thing that he was talking about. She smiled instead, trying to look every bit as seductive as her sire. Elizabeth had been Vampirerotique’s star female performer until she had decided to quit her job and return to her family instead. They had met shortly after that, and Elizabeth had turned her into a vampire. That was thirty years ago now. It had taken Sera most of those years to become accustomed to life as a vampire.

“Come by tomorrow night when we’re closed,” Callum said. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

“Thank you,” Sera said and he smiled at her, nodded, and then disappeared into the crowd.

Their excited chatter filled the theatre, the people passing her by discussing the show and the finale. Other elite vampires were still in their seats, enjoying the lingering scent of blood and sharing an intimate moment of their own with their partners. Sometimes the kissing that happened post-performance in the stalls was more erotic than what occurred on stage. Sera dragged her gaze away from one couple near the front who were going at it with wild abandon. They looked as though they wouldn’t make it out of the theatre before they succumbed to their desire and took things a step further.

She glanced out of the corner of her eye at Elizabeth. “Does Callum have a lover?”

“I thought you had set your sights on Antoine?” Elizabeth laughed when she blushed and then her expression darkened. “A wife... and I’ve heard rumours that she’s a werewolf.”

A werewolf? Sera had expected the owners of an erotic theatre to be quite liberal and wild, but marrying a werewolf? She definitely hadn’t expected that one.

“You’re serious?” She never could tell with her sire. The woman enjoyed a joke more than was natural. Sera supposed that you needed to have an easygoing attitude when you chose to spend fifty years participating in an on-stage orgy with people you hardly knew.

Her stomach turned.

Thank the Devil she wouldn’t have to do such a thing to get her chance to speak with Antoine. Just an interview that she would ace thanks to her sire’s tuition and then she would be in his office, alone with him. Just the thought stirred heat in her veins. Since her sire had agreed to help her, she had spent every night trying to figure out how to win Antoine. It wasn’t going to be easy. She knew that much. She’d had lovers in her human life and even in her vampire one, but she had never pursued a man before, not as she intended to with Antoine.

Elizabeth had laughed when she had confessed that and had told her that she should probably start with easier prey and work her way up to someone like Antoine. That gave her the feeling that she was going to fail. What sort of woman would he desire? He ran an erotic theatre and watched the beautiful women performing on his stage without the barest hint of desire in his expression. If they couldn’t arouse him, what hope did she have?

Maybe he wasn’t interested in women who worked at his theatre. If that was the case, was she only shooting down what slim chance she had with him by interviewing for a position as a performer?

“I need a drink, and you look as though you could use one too.” Elizabeth grasped her wrist and tugged her towards the exit at the back of the theatre. “Come along, my pupil. You have a lot to learn before tomorrow night if you’re going to have a snowball’s chance in Hell of impressing that man.”

Sera trudged along behind her sire, weaving through the lingering crowd. Elizabeth’s warnings rang in her ears, one louder than the rest. She glanced up at the three storeys of elegant boxes that lined the theatre. The gold on the carvings decorating the curved cream low walls that edged the private boxes reflected the warm lights that illuminated the heavy red velvet curtain now closed across the stage. Matching curtains hung at the back of the boxes, some of them open now that the performance had ended. Many of the boxes were empty but beautifully dressed ladies and gentlemen still occupied the others.

She spotted Antoine amongst a group in one of the boxes on the first tier. He was smiling. She had never seen him smile. It looked forced to her. Hollow. Even among his own kind, he was still distant, his eyes devoid of emotion as he put on a grand performance of his own.

Sera wasn’t going to overcome the challenge of winning Antoine’s heart just by meeting the man.

First, she had to break through a barrier that was beginning to look impenetrable.

He was an aristocrat, and an old one at that. Although he looked barely a day over thirty-five, he was in fact over a thousand years old. His brother, Snow, was almost twice his age.

Sera was an elite.

To an aristocrat, she was some sort of filth they scraped off their shoes and nothing made that clearer than the theatres. The aristocrats sat in their boxes, looking down on the elite gathered in the stalls, separated and distant from those they saw as commoners and mongrels.

That disdain for her kind was the reason why Antoine looked so glacial whenever he had to greet the more important members of the elite, and why he had failed to hear her when she had tried to speak with him. He wanted nothing to do with the elite vampires outside the small circle that were part of the theatre. He would certainly want nothing to do with her. Not only was she an elite, but she was a turned human. She was the bottom rung of the social ladder and he was the top. The elite that he deemed worthy of a moment of his time, that he greeted with gritted teeth in order to maintain good relations with her kind, were all born as vampires into families that had turned humans within their ranks. None of them were turned humans themselves.

Even Elizabeth was born of a vampire father and turned mother.

If Sera wanted to shatter Antoine’s armour, she would have to convince him to see beyond the fact that she was a turned human.

Elizabeth had taught her a few things, weapons that she hadn’t held in her arsenal before, but she wasn’t sure if she was brave enough to risk using them on Antoine.

Could she do what Elizabeth had said it would take to shatter his defences?

Could she really seduce such a powerful man?

Sera curled her fingers into tight fists and stared at him. He paused in the middle of saying something to the aristocrat vampires in the box with him, slowly turned towards her and then lowered his eyes. They locked on her. He had felt her watching him. Her heart beat harder, thumping against her chest as her blood heated, but she held his gaze across the theatre stalls, refusing to back down.

The next time she saw him, she would be alone with him.

And she would seduce him.
